Bridal Shower: All Candy

I've been telling myself that I should blog more but these days, I'm finding that there are less and less hours in the day and it's hard to get into social media (Blog, Facebook, Twitter). During my hiatus, I've launched the new lilyboxdesign website which can be found here. The gallery is not fully updated but over the next few months we will be updating the gallery with more images.

Today's post is inspired by the fact that right now, I'm surrounded with jars and bags of candy for an event we are doing this weekend; and while I was visiting some of my favourite blogs, I noticed this recent candy themed bridal shower on Martha Stewart Weddings which was put together by Darcy Miller for Dylan Lauren. It earned a wow from me and it's now one of my favourite bridal shower themes to be featured on that site.

My blog posts have been scarce of late due to several reasons but mainly due to not finding the time in my extremely busy schedule to post about all the pretty things I find daily. Both around me and on the world wide web. There are so many amazing and talented stylist, photographers and florists around today that I'm constantly in awe of the inspirational images I come across and often blog about. So after 3 years of training, learning and taking in all the experiences I've earned, I will be officially launching my own event design studio in London this May. I am really excited and a lot of hard work has gone into putting all this together and I hope you will follow me on this new journey that I'm embarking on. It is scary and also exciting and I'm surrounded by a bunch of lovely friends and family who have encouraged me to take on this new adventure. There will be a lot of changes in the next couple of weeks or months and I'll update this blog as often as I can with details about my work and much more. I am really excited and Lilyboxdesign started out as a dream and it's now becoming a reality for me.

Today's post is a spotlight on beautiful photography on brides and their bridesmaids. I love when simple and unique details are captured by photographers. It's playful, fun and pretty without been too cookie cutter. I would love to know what unique brides maid photography style you've come across.

I love dahlias, oh yes I do! So when I was browsing through one of my favourite floral stylists blog (Kat flower) I came across this delightful photo shoot. Naturally, the gorgeous dinner plate dahlias were the first thing I noticed. Aren't they pretty? And kudos to the stylist, photographer and the amazing Kat flower for the beautiful shoot.

Dahlia - Cafe Au Lait

I have been totally obsessed with dahlia's for a while now. I go through phases where I'm fascinated with a type of bloom. From hydrangea's to tree peonies, anemones and my undying love for ranunculus. It's hard to choose a favourite since I love them all but the stunning dinner plate dahlia especially cafe au lait has got me waxing lyrical.

Don't believe me, check out this bouquet of dinner plate dahlia's and dusty miller. So much swooning from me. I would love that bouquet carried with that dress from Vera Wang for David's bridal and wearing either of those shoes from Badgley Mischka.

My colour focus today is green but not just any green, it revolves around one of my favourite plants; succulents. Succulents are extremely beautiful plants and they work well for a rustic themed wedding. They are also a great alternative for the D.I.Y or eco-conscious bride who wants to create that charm and elegance on a small budget with little or no fuss.
There are so many cool centerpieces that can be achieved using succulents to wow the guests. Succulents are quite sturdy thus making them easy to handle unlike other delicate plants. A few geeky facts about succulents. They are called fat plants and the Aloe commonly known or used as Aloe Vera is also a species and it does wonders for the skin. Be inspired!

Sometimes I think that I’m hard-wired to like pink. However, I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t like all shades of pink. I like pink when it’s used in combination with black, grey or brown to compensate for its intensity. But if I had to use pink, it will be blush pink; like peonies with a powder pink hue. Love!

It's in Italian so if you don't know the difference between your Parmigiano Reggiano and your Pecorino Romano then don't worry; Valentina's work is fabulous, swoon worthy and the blog is really easily to follow.

Modern Twist on Tradition

I love this new photo shoot from the Martha Stewart Wedding winter issue. The traditional twist in the details keeps it simple but yet extremely elegant and modern. I'm more of a less is more person and I love creating statements where the guests go "how did they think of that" rather than the "how much did they spend" and this spread has those elements.
The white dress, the twist on the stationery, with the twist on the something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue tradition makes it all whimsical. My personal favourite is the garland made out of wood veneer backed with contact paper. Definitely worth checking out.

Woke up this morning and the world around me was all white. We've had a few inches of snow and with Christmas just round the corner, It got me longing for an all white inspiration board.
A few details about the inspiration for the board; it came from that lovely cake picture by call me cupcake. Call me cupcake is a Swedish blog filled with lots of eye candy goodies. One of those that make your heart melt and you find your self obsessed with all the goodness and sweetness. Okay, maybe just me but the blog is really worth checking out.

Blue and Green Birthday Theme

I love blue and I will go as far as saying that it could be my favourite colour. Which is why I fell in love with this gorgeous dress worn by Keira Knightley. The dress inspired this mood board and I decided to play around with this shade of blue with several warm tones and jewel green to complement the blue giving it a very modern and playful opulent look. Summer Fun: Baby Shower

I'm really loving summer colours right now especially this baby shower idea filled with all the beautiful colours of summer. With the base colour been yellow with hints of pink or coral, light blue, green and chocolate brown, it works for a gender neutral baby shower.

I love monochromatic themes but lately I've been trying to play with mixes of colour ensuring that the look and feel does not resemble a kids party; giving it a more grown up look but yet playful and relaxed.
I started the base of this theme with a light shade of yellow and then layered different shades of yellow, coral, pink, blue and brown.

I was excited last week when I got the chance to showcase some of Peggy Porschen’s work on the blog. I’ve always admired her work from afar and the people at Peggy Porschen’s cakes were nice enough to send me photos of some of her work to share on the blog and also to give my readers an opportunity to win one of her books.

Her cakes, cookies and cupcakes have a distinct style and signature and they look absolutely divine. You can get a peak into her world by winning her book “Romantic Cakes” and If you are a novice or beginner like me, this is the book for you. I am really excited about sharing this gorgeous wedding palette that I have been working on recently. Green and brown is a very rich and warm palette that allows for a variety of layers and textures to give a modern look with a traditional twist. I have a natural inclination to make everything pink, white or blue so this has been a bit of a pleasant change from the norm for me.
Your colour palette does not have to be two colours. You can go with one colour and layer tints or shades of the same colour, creating a monochromatic effect or creating a rich texture with eclectic combinations or using accents of a third colour. I have long been a fan of Mathew Robbins so I was pretty impressed to see this wonderful pop of colour with the added whimsical twist using those cute fabric birds. Spring symbolises rebirth and renewal. Arguably the most special season of all and oh did I mention that I love spring!

Mother's Day Lunch

It's mother's day this Sunday, March 14 and what better way to say thank you (aside from the presents and flowers of course) than a mother's day brunch or lunch. This insp. board was inspired by a table setting put together by Sunday Suppers . The green and white with the rustic feel is fresh, clean and very homey. All you need is a simple table, white dishes, white linen and a vase of your mum's favourite spring flowers. Serve her favourite dish and dessert. I like the mother's day candy buffet from Amy Atlas. Spring is upon us

My favourite flower season is upon us. The spring flower season allows me to take a virtual tour and admire the beautiful displays been created by flower designers that I adore. My local flower market is also at its best; bursting with colour and bountiful blooms.

I love the lush and full arrangement that you get with Ranunculus. Ranunculus is one of my favourite spring flowers and in Latin it means “little frog”. Also known as buttercup and coyote's eyes, they come in white, yellow, orange, red and pink. They symbolise a message of been dazzled by a lover's charms or attraction. Be Inspired!

It's my favourite Tuesday of the year; Shrove Tuesday otherwise known as Pancake Tuesday. While searching for a new recipe, I came across the yummy looking raspberry, lime and coconut pancakes on the British Larder site. New Year and Flowers

Happy New Year and am I glad that 2010 is finally here.
My latest obsession is the cute and nostalgic designs by Cath Kidston. Although I like my designs plain, clean and simple; which explains my incurable infatuation with white, the 8 year old in me still yearns for pastel colours and flowery prints.
I love everything about her designs which I would describe as “new age retro” with a twist. Seriously, who can say no to a polka dotted, rose bud covered homeware, cookware and fabrics?
Her floral prints are quirky but fresh and modern. One for the girly girls, but daringly bold girls.

New Year's Eve Dinner Party

The New Year's eve dinner party I wish I could have in bold colours: blue, green and hints of red. The play in colours and light used in the image below by David Beahm adds a soft and warm glow to the setting; creating a relaxed atmosphere to welcome in the new year.
I also adore the rustic look of the chairs by Southernliving combined with the wish boxes for guests. Provide your guests with scraps of paper for them to write their wishes for the new year. Now who to invite?

I hope it's not to early to start thinking Christmas. Christmas is my favourite holiday of the year especially the gift giving part. Homemade gifts are budget friendly and thoughtful especially when they are packaged really pretty. They are perfect as Christmas party favours and gives a unique and lovely feel if set near the front door as a carry-out gift. Below are a few of my favourite edible homemade gifts with instructions and downloadable templates.

1. Mix things up with bakerella's cowgirl or cowboy cookies. Simply feel smooth ball jars with ingredients for cookies, add a little fabric, labels and a suede bow. Instructions can be found here on the bakerella site and free printable labels can be downloaded here.

2. International spices from country living magazine. Recipes and how-to's can be found here.

Pink Hyacinth

On my way home today, I came across the most beautiful set of pink hyacinth. I couldn't resist staring at their lovely dainty and delicate tiny petals. Hyacinth colours are white, pink, purple, blue, lavender, yellow and orange and they have a sweet floral fragrant. I have come to a personal conclusion that they aren't used enough and I am on a personal mission to save the hyacinth :)

Ever been to a sip and see? Today's post is inspired by the new baby boy in the family. It is a type of meet and greet for friends and family to welcome the new baby. The overall theme is light, informal and minimal. I've gone with white and hints of pale blue. The white symbolises innocence and purity with pale blue for a boy. Think Pink: Afternoon Tea

A fun way to help create awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness month would be to host a think pink afternoon tea inviting friends and loved ones. It can also be used as a fund raising event if you get everyone who attends to give a token to the charity.
Pink is such a fun colour to work with; serve mini pink treats, pink strawberry macarons, make a fun pink centrepiece and give your guests a thank you gift by making tea cup candles in pink vintage tea cups. For this you will need a wax block from the craft store which often comes with the wick thread. Melt the wax over a pot of hot boiling water or bain-marie and pour the melted wax in the tea cups. Cut the wick thread to your desired length, dip into the hot wax and leave to cool and set. To donate to Cancer Research during the breast cancer awareness month click here.

Growing up, we had harvest festivals in my school and church. It represented that time of the year when all the crops have been harvested. We gathered fruits and crops grown on land, took it to church or school and celebrated the gift of harvest. The gifts were then given to the not so fortunate. The items were often placed in wicker baskets representing the horn of plenty or the cornucopia. It is a symbol of food, fortune, fertility and abundance and for this I am thankful to God. It's autumn and the garden, yard and farm is bursting with Septembers harvest. Some of my favourite vegetables come to season in the autumn; this week we celebrate edible art and today we start with vegetables.
A gathering of natural abundance can inspire elegant centerpieces and these simple yet stunning arrangements below can be easily achieved with a beautiful container and a bit of creativity.
Arrange Squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, artichokes or any fresh produce in beautiful containers or lined baskets, rejecting battered and bruised ones, stack and pile them so they do not appear to be uniformed. You can insert or add rosemary, greenery or candles to accent your cornucopia. Be inspired!

I know summer is officially over but is there a rule that states ice cream is only for summer? A great excuse for my favourite indulgence is this D.I.Y Ice-Cream Parlour by Amy Moss of Eat Drink Chic. It is a welcome substitute for the ever popular candy buffet at parties.

Even better, there is a free how to guide, instructions and templates here on Amy's site. The templates available for download include the topping sign template, those gorgeous paper cups, mini popcorn cups for spoons, sauce and jar labels and so much more.
The only substitute I would make is storing the ice cream in a cute portable mini fridge like the ones below from Argos to prevent them from melting quickly. They come in different colours and they look cute too. Enjoy!

Carnival Party

It is that time of the year again when we celebrate culture and diversity. The Notting Hill carnival is Europe's largest street party and it turns 50 this year having started in 1959. The carnival starts on Sunday with the kids carnival and finishes on bank holiday Monday with an adult theme. A big excuse to drink as much rum punch as you can and an opportunity to sample different exotic flavours from all over the globe. I can just smell the sweet aroma of jerk chicken, rice and peas, fried plantain, patties and obviously washing it down with some Spanish sangria.
Invite friends round for a carnival after party and serve a multicultural cuisine. Get drinks, piñata, music and you are all set for a festive bank holiday. The only down side is it spells the end of the British summer time.

In terms of drinks, my one weakness is cocktails. They taste so good it's hard to believe they contain alcohol. The following recipes are easy to follow. Click on cocktail name to open recipe.

Simple creative ideas are often the most beautiful and captivating; These budget friendly DIY vases are no exception. Not only are they cost effective, they are also Eco-friendly. Below are a few with tips and tricks!

Surround old jars with sparkling beaded bracelets. (country living)

Old light bulbs are turned into lovely hanging vases. (enviro-mental)

Hot-glue coloured pencil or straws to a glass jar or vase and magnify the colours with hues of floral blooms. (country living)

Wrap a square vase in striped and polka-dotted ribbons. Hot-glue the back of the ribbon to secure firmly. (country living)

Grocery store flowers

Fresh cut flowers from the grocery store don't often look appealing. At least that was what I thought until I saw an article by David Stark in the country living magazine. Now I am a firm believer that you can make them look elegant with style and transform them into stunning centerpieces.

Separate contrasting colours and arrange similar blooms in a vase. Left over greenery and fillers such as baby's breath can be arranged in a pitcher to create a stunning focal point.

Importance of colour in design

I was shown the colour wheel in school and completely dismissed it as one of those things you learn but in the real world you probably don't need like simultaneous equation (any one ever use those?). Then I came across the above on a Martha Stewart post and it got me thinking about colours and design. I thought about how many times I came across a floral design, inspiration board and even blogs and decided to take a second look because of its impact and appeal.

Colour creates impressions and sensations and is the first thing we record. Reports suggest that colour impressions account for 60% of acceptance or rejection on any product or service. Hospitals have white, yellow and/or green which is soothing for patients, nature sites have shades of green, McDonald's and fast food outlets have shades of brown, orange and earthy tones to make you feel hungry and it has been said although arguably that most successful sport teams wear red.

Kids are captivated by colours and they tend to pick the most colourful item in a set; which is why marketing directed at kids plays with colours. Its not only the bold or vibrant colours, its the colour combination and the brightness that lends to the attractiveness. Attractive items stay in our memories and subconscious and whether you are starting a small business or you own a large established business, the colours you use in your logos will affect your brand recognition.

Nature through flower and plants demonstrates the importance of colour. In event designing, effective use of colours will go a long way in determining the sort of atmosphere you create and hence help in creating that "wow" factor. Whatever colours we go for be it neutrals, warm, cool or bold colours, how it is combined will determine and help maximise the impact generated.

The beauty is we are all different and whatever colour we go for depends on our personality but one thing is for sure; colour is a strong element in the decisions we make.
